Blanking entails cold forging of metal sheets, which allows the obtaining, without swarf removal and through a plastic deformation, objects of the desired size and shape from sheets of metal (i.e., steel, copper, aluminum or light alloys) of limited thickness.

Blanking is, therefore, an operation whereby an element of defined shape and dimensions is obtained from a metal sheet. It effects, through the use of a punch and a die, holes or full pieces of complex shapes on the metal sheet in a short time with very low costs.

One or more finished pieces and swarf (waste materials) are produced for each job. Blanking operations are often flanked by bending activities, operations by which it is possible to obtain objects of various shapes without changing the thickness of the sheet.
